Wear comfortable, light weight clothing that allows for aerobic activity and stretching, and keep hydrated before class to help you get the most out of your workout.
Uniforms are not required for initial participation. Once you are comfortable with the class and feel you are ready to commit to ongoing training, please let the instructor know you are ready to buy a uniform and he will bring one to class for you.
The First Day
Feel free to introduce yourself to our instructor, Suh Bom Nim (senior instructor) Glenn M. Goffin, and your fellow students. Jewelry, watches, shoes and socks should be removed prior to beginning the workout. All students help set up mats for the class, and generally stretch or meditate individually before instruction begins. Drinking fountains are located throughout the YMCA, but many students bring their own water to minimize class disruptions.
Class is conducted in a traditional setting. Fellow students will help you to learn the To jang (martial art school) etiquette.
The Workout
Workouts begin with breathing and stretching exercises that are meant to clear the mind of the day's cares and help students gauge areas of their bodies that may be tight or in pain. Pay attention to what your body is telling you during these exercises so that you do not aggravate strained areas, and so that you can pay special attention to areas that you may feel need extra work.
After these initial exercises, classes progress through punching, kicking and blocking exercises both individually and with partners, sparring and movement practice, self defense techniques, and individualized training working towards belt rank advancement in both Tae Kwon Do and Hapkido. At the end of the first hour, beginning students will be excused and the advanced class continues training. Beginning students are welcome to stay and watch the advanced class.
Furthering Your Training
Some students meet regularly at the YMCA or other locations for informal practice outside of class; check with classmates to see when and where people are meeting. The club has a Yahoo group to help students organize and keep in touch. Ask in class to be added to the list.
